Compass Rose Theater Classes and Workshops is part of Compass Rose Theater, a non-profit professional teaching theater company founded in the spring of 2011 by Lucinda Merry-Browne and currently led by Executive Director Barbara Webber and Artistic Director Madeline Ausin. All Compass Rose Theater faculty are teaching artists with at least a Bachelor’s Degree in theater from an accredited institution, and some have Master’s Degrees in theater. Faculty members have teaching experience with a range of student populations and a depth of knowledge of how to challenge and stimulate the creative process within students individually and as an acting ensemble. The theater follows a process-based approach to theater education in which performance results from hard work and in-depth study of technique, and students work alongside professionals and are fully compensated as with the other actors. Compass Rose Theater states that it believes inclusion enriches creativity and broadens the world of its participants, and it focuses on producing plays of superb quality and richness with accomplished professional artists as well as talented students. The theater has become a well-respected fixture in the Annapolis community and has received several prestigious Helen Hayes nominations and recommendations, including for the 2025–26 season productions of “Annie” and “Rent,” and a previous production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” was nominated for seven Helen Hayes Awards. A review from THEATER BLOOM described Compass Rose Theater as producing “the most charming production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee I think I can ever recall seeing.”
