Bug Camp: Insects, Science & Society includes hands-on activities such as lab experiments with live bugs, arts and crafts, and team building and games. Campers take interactive field trips and field trips around the UMD campus to local bug habitats, where they interact with bugs in their natural environment and explore bug bodies, life stages, habitats, and houses. Activities also include a focus on pollinators and pests and how humans and bugs get along.
• Ages: 7–12 years old
• Schedule: Two one-week sessions, Monday–Friday, 9:00am–3:00pm, with after care available from 3:00–4:30pm
• Price: $450 camp fee (shirt included); $575 for camp plus aftercare
Bug Camp: Insects, Science & Society states that insects are the most abundant animals on earth and that kids ages 7–12 learn how amazing and valuable bugs are in summer camp through hands-on activities and interactive field trips. The camp’s mission is to teach kids how amazing and valuable bugs truly are, to give campers experience with science in the field and the lab, and to have campers come away with an understanding of the important relationship between humans and insects. Bug Camp is piloting a lottery system for summer camp registration, and all applications submitted during the lottery window have an equal chance of being selected. The roster and waitlists for Bug Camp are full for summer 2026. There are two one-week sessions of Bug Camp: Session 1 runs June 22–26, 2026, and Session 2 runs July 6–10, 2026.
Bug Camp: Insects, Science & Society is supported by the University of Maryland’s Department of Entomology and other University of Maryland partners. The primary counselors are historically pulled from a group of 4-H individuals, and internship opportunities are offered to students from the University of Maryland, particularly those from a math, science, or education track. To release a child to someone other than a legal guardian, written permission from a legal guardian is required.
