The Portland Museum of Art was founded in 1882. It is led by Director Mark Bessire. The museum states that it is committed to its Art for All mission and seeks to create an inclusive space that champions open expression and makes art accessible to all. The museum reports that it seeks to tell multifaceted stories through art and showcases significant holdings of American, European, and contemporary art, as well as iconic works from Maine.

The museum notes that PMA membership includes unlimited admission to the PMA and to museums across North America, early access to exhibition openings, and discounts on offerings throughout the museum. The PMA launched a four-year, cross-departmental accessibility initiative called “Your Museum, Reimagined” to reinstall and digitize the collection, improve physical accessibility, and remove financial means as a barrier. As part of this work, the PMA reports a launch of the collection online with a 20% increase in time spent on portlandmuseum.org, its first-ever PMA collection catalogue, and a reinstallation of the collection with 30% more work on view. The PMA also purchases and operates the Winslow Homer Studio, which it reports is restored to how it appeared during Homer’s lifetime and opened to the public.
