The Creature Conservancy is a non-profit wildlife education organization with the mission “Conservation Through Education.” It provides homes to more than 400 individual animals from roughly 100 different species, including former exotic pets, injured non-releasable wildlife, and animals from USDA-approved establishments that serve as educational ambassadors. The organization states that it carefully adheres to the five freedoms of animal welfare, with diets monitored by staff under the guidance of veterinarians and environments designed with animals’ physical and mental health in mind. The team includes professional animal behavioral staff, and Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital provides low cost and often free veterinary care to all their animals. The Featured Animal Program changes monthly, and visitors during weekend open hours get a more close-up view of animals and have opportunities to speak directly with zookeepers. The Creature Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that depends on supporters through donating, volunteering, memberships, and wish list items, and it offers Creatures in The Community Events for groups that cannot come to their campus. Steve Marsh is the founder and head curator, and in August 2005 he discovered a wooden box containing a 42-inch long American alligator, which led to the establishment of The Creature Conservancy.
