Opportunities to Educate Children (OEC) is a non-profit student organization based out of the University of Michigan that organizes year-round opportunities for involvement. OEC supports and coordinates the placement of University of Michigan tutors and mentors in local organizations, including Community Action Network (CAN) After School Programs, Peace Neighborhood Center’s Youth Services, hospital tutoring sites, after-school programs, and community-sponsored organizations. OEC tutors work with hospitalized children who miss weeks to months of school to keep them on track with their peers. OEC partners with Community Action Network to provide in-person tutoring for students Pre-K through 12 in Washtenaw County, and students in CAN’s After School Programs take part in enrichment, social-emotional development, homework, nutrition, and other activities. An entire public school classroom visits 826michigan’s writing lab in downtown Ann Arbor for field trips, including an action-packed two-hour experience focused on building students’ confidence in their writing.
826 Michigan opened its doors in June of 2005 and offers a completely free drop-in tutoring program for students between 8 and 18 years old. The organization’s field trip program brings full public school classrooms into its writing lab for structured writing experiences.
The OEC leadership team includes Executive Director Rachel Anderson, Assistant Executive Katie Chang, Tutoring Director Hospital Aniket Dagar, Assistant Hospital Raegan Ingamells, Tutoring Director Community Kyle Hoffmeyer, Tutoring Director Community Ethan Magley, Public Relations Director Kate Vandebunt, and Finance Director Vishwaas Gangeddula. OEC’s mission states that it seeks to promote and provide educational access for children in Washtenaw County through tutoring and mentoring from University of Michigan students, and that it strives to provide educational empowerment and support social change as a non-profit. The mission also states that, as a student organization, OEC aims to create meaningful experiences, cultural understanding, and lifelong memories for its members, with a vision that no child in Washtenaw County is without access to education and opportunities for success.
