Forest Lake Area Schools Community Education states that its mission is to prepare and empower every student to thrive in and contribute to an ever-changing world. Community Education facilitates the community’s use of school buildings and grounds. Community Education notes that it provides a supportive, inclusive environment for children to learn new skills and create meaningful friendships, and that through shared experiences, young athletes bond over common goals and create a sense of belonging. Participants in youth athletics are assigned to teams and leagues based on grade and school attended, and if there are enough participants for two teams in a grade, teams are assigned through a random draw. Community Education reserves the right to cancel any team that does not have a coach. Interested coaches are asked to undergo a background check as required by the school district, in the interest of child safety.
The broader Community Education program offers activities in creative arts, music, business and finance, early childhood and parenting, childcare, and other areas in addition to athletics and recreation. It states that it provides safe, accessible learning environments and opportunities for all ages, and that a wide range of classes are offered with options to meet many interests. Family and parent support is provided through Early Childhood Family Education classes, home visits, and parent engagement from prenatal to grade 3. Early childhood screening and preschool programs are offered to boost early learning skills so children can enter kindergarten ready for their school experience. School-age care programs offer before and after-school care housed in school buildings. Youth development programs give students chances to explore interests and develop skills beyond the school curriculum, and engaging youth in leadership and service activities is described as a way to build strengths and help mitigate risk-taking behaviors. Adult Basic Education programs are available to help adults gain skills and qualifications to become fully employed, self-sufficient, and able to participate fully in the community.
The Community Education leadership and support team includes: Corey McKinnon, Director; Tracy Angelo, Administrative Assistant; Susanne Kimber, Coordinator (Adult Basic Education); Laurie Drolson, Coordinator (Adult Lifelong Learning) and Coordinator (Youth Development & Enrichment); Janet Nutter, Planner (Adult Lifelong Learning) and Secondary Youth Planner; Beth Tetzlaff, Office Assistant (Adult Lifelong Learning) and Office Assistant (Youth Development & Enrichment); Jennifer Olson, Supervisor (Aquatics); Jay Ekman, Coordinator (Athletics & Facilities); Kayleigh Sonterre, Planner (Athletics & Facilities); Melanie Haas, Planner (Athletics & Facilities); Holly Oberholtzer, Office Assistant (Athletics & Facilities); Bethany Hardy, Coordinator (Early Childhood Programs); Rachel Kaiser, Assistant Coordinator (Early Childhood Programs); Lori Harrington, Program Support Manager (Early Childhood Programs); Katie Suloff, Office Assistant (Early Childhood Programs); Erika Siverhus, Office Assistant (Early Childhood Programs); Bonnie Hushagen, Health Office Assistant (Early Childhood Programs); Nancy Siefert, Coordinator (Childcare Programs – SAC & Sonic); Sue Waataja, Assistant Coordinator (Childcare Programs – SAC & Sonic); Autumn Beireis, Support Specialist (Childcare Programs – SAC & Sonic); Kristin Trotto, Office Assistant (Childcare Programs – SAC & Sonic); Alexa Nelson, Coordinator (Marketing); and Melissa McGraw, Elementary Youth Planner.
