North Star Art Club was founded by licensed art teacher and local mom Richelle Norton. The program states that it is an artist-led after school art club in Minneapolis for students in the Twin Cities to enrich their arts interests, grow their creativity, and develop skills and techniques, and that it is a creative space for students to develop creative problem solving skills and visual arts techniques without grading and rubrics. The program notes that it is inspired by Richelle’s mom, Jean, and that it is for kids ages 8 and up who want to learn more about art and grow their ability through after school art classes or art camps.
Ms. Norton is a licensed Visual Arts Educator and former public school teacher with a Master of Education from the University of Minnesota in Curriculum & Instruction with K–12 Visual Arts Licensure, and she graduated with honors from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science in K–12 Spanish Education and ESL. Liz Genrich is an educator and artist with a BA in Art History and a MED in Art Education who has taught students from pre-K to high school in the Twin Cities and on the East Coast for over 25 years in public, private, and charter schools and art enrichment programs. The leadership team description states that the goal is to create a robust community of engaged young artists and that the curriculum is educator-led with small class sizes and hands-on art experiences in small group settings.
The program notes that art camps and after school clubs are held in a small setting, that space is limited for each class, and that art camps are limited to 10 students per session. It states that each class is different so students in multiple classes have unique experiences, and that after school art club is meant to support development of creativity and artistic skills with in-person instruction by artists. Students receive a snack at the start of class, and the program states that after school snack is considered the most important meal of the day.
North Star Art Club offers one-on-one studio time with a licensed art teacher for students who want to improve skills or be introduced to a new topic of their choice, and describes this as an opportunity to build a custom art class with access to all North Star Art Club resources. The program also offers North Star Art Club gift cards that can be used for individual classes, art camps, and other offerings. The program states that it is a creative space for students in Minneapolis to be creative without worrying about making a mess.
The mission statement notes that the program was founded to support students in the Twin Cities in enriching, developing, and improving their artistic skills through weekly after school art clubs or summer camps with artist instructors. The program states that classes are based on the school calendar for Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Edina, and Bloomington Public Schools and that financial assistance is available. The program notes that fall sign-ups and summer art camp registration are open and that families can plan ahead for summer 2026 camps.
