Summer Tennis in the Parks is an introductory tennis program for ages 5–17 and is celebrating its 75th season. The Summer Tennis in the Park program has been running since 1952, and since 1952 thousands of youth have learned to play tennis in InnerCity Tennis’s Summer Parks program. InnerCity Tennis has partnered with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Department since the 1970s to provide summer tennis instruction to the youth of Minneapolis, and the program creates 50 jobs each summer for youth, many of whom grew up learning tennis in this program.
All applicants for staff positions must pass a background check, complete an interview, and attend mandatory orientation and training. Head Instructors must be at least 17 years old, have reliable transportation to bring equipment to the park daily, and have a minimum of 2 or more years of experience teaching tennis or coaching children preferred, with prior supervisory experience and college tennis playing experience preferred. Assistant Instructors must be at least 15 years old, with Junior Varsity, High School, or College athletic experience preferred and prior experience teaching or working with children. Apprentice Instructors must be at least 14 years old, with previous athletic experience preferred and prior experience working with children.
InnerCity Tennis states its mission as “Play with Purpose Developing and unleashing the potential of youth on and off the tennis court,” using tennis as a vehicle to tap into the potential within each child and instilling mental, physical, and values-based tools that serve youth on and off the court and in the classroom. The program notes that class times are grouped by age, class sizes are limited with low player-to-coach ratios, scholarships are available for all youth in need, public membership is free and allows registration for Summer Tennis in the Parks, and the health and well-being of participants and coaches are prioritized. The program also states that kids build teamwork, confidence, and hand-eye coordination skills, learn healthy nutrition habits, and develop a life-long love of physical fitness.
