About
Summer Tennis in the Parks offers one-hour tennis lessons that include group drills and games. Participants work on specific tennis skills such as the volley, groundstroke, overhead, and serve. Rackets are provided for youth to use during practice at no cost.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: Hourly lessons run Monday–Friday between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm from June 15 to July 31, 2026, with no classes over the July 4 holiday week
• Price: $50 per week or $250 for all six weeks
InnerCity Tennis reports that this is the 75th season of its Summer Parks program, which has run since 1952. The program offers introductory tennis for ages 5–17 at parks across Minneapolis, with groups split up by age at each park and class times grouped by age. At most locations, younger kids play during the first hours and older kids play later, and some parks have two one-hour programs while others have four one-hour programs. Hourly lessons run Monday–Friday, kids can join the program at any time, and kids can attend whenever they are available with no minimum day commitment. Weekly registration options are available, class sizes are limited with low player-to-coach ratios, and make-up classes are not available for this program. Summer 2026 Folwell, Powderhorn, and Columbia Heights sites are free, and scholarships are available for all youth in need. Rackets are available as needed for all participants free of charge.
InnerCity Tennis states that it uses tennis as a vehicle to tap into the deep potential within each child, and that its coaches instill mental, physical, and values-based tools that serve youth on and off the court and in the classroom. The organization notes that kids in this program build teamwork, confidence, and hand-eye coordination skills, learn healthy nutrition habits, and develop a life-long love of physical fitness. InnerCity Tennis reports that it prioritizes the health and well-being of participants and coaches, and that classes will be canceled if the Heat Index reaches 100 degrees or the Air Quality Index is 150 or higher.
InnerCity Tennis states that it has partnered with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Department since the 1970s to provide summer tennis instruction to the youth of Minneapolis. It reports that it is a USTA Community Tennis Association and a member of the USTA Foundation National Junior Tennis and Learning Network. The program creates 50 jobs each summer for youth, many of whom previously learned tennis in this program.
All applicants for staff positions must pass a background check, complete an interview, and attend mandatory orientation and training. Head and Assistant Instructors must have reliable transportation to bring equipment to the park daily. Head Instructors must be at least 17 years old, with a minimum of two years of experience teaching tennis or coaching children preferred, prior supervisory experience, and college tennis playing experience preferred. Assistant Instructors must be at least 15 years old, with Junior Varsity, High School, or College athletic experience preferred, and prior experience teaching or working with children. Apprentice Instructors must be at least 14 years old, with previous athletic experience and prior experience working with children preferred.
