Camp Foley was established in 1924 by Father John P. Foley as a boys’ camp under the name Camp St. Thomas and later became Camp Foley under Bob and Viola Schmid in the 1940s, adding girls in 1974. It has been operated by the Schmid family since 1949, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024, and transitioned to a nonprofit organization in 2025. The camp operates on a 4:1 camper-to-staff ratio and welcomes campers from all over the world each summer. Camp Foley is accredited by the American Camp Association and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity.
The current leadership includes Executive Director Alli, a third-generation camp director who has been a full-time camp director since 2004, and her mother Marie, described as a retiree-in-training, who has directed camp since 1985. A team of directors and assistant directors is on site every day, and a leadership team of parents, teachers, assistant directors, and directors with decades of camp experience supports campers and staff. Camp Foley’s mission states that participants develop skills, build supportive relationships, grow in character, and learn independence in a natural setting, guided by the phrase “Grow Grit. Investigate Independence.” and the vision of Fr. Foley to get kids into nature in a kid-centered environment.
Counselors are young adults ages 18–25 who must complete an application, provide three references, interview in person or via Zoom, and pass a background check before being hired. They are required to have the knowledge, experience, and ability to instruct at least two camp activities, and they complete an 11-day training program before campers arrive that includes rehearsing emergency procedures and attending seminars on the goals and objectives of Camp Foley. Counselors are continuously evaluated throughout the summer by directors and assistant directors, who are present in activities and cabins, and there is a Registered Nurse on site at all times. An Environmental Center is located on site, and the property also serves as an event and wedding venue. Scholarships are available due to the generosity of alumni and other supporters. One camper, Joey, age 13, stated, “The food has changed my life. I mean it is so good.”
