About
New Native Theatre Youth Theater Summer Camp is a weeklong youth program that focuses on theatre training through the Youth Theater Summer Camp. Participants take part in activities connected to producing commissioned and existing plays by Native playwrights and producing community created plays about cultural and social justice topics. The camp includes a performance on Friday afternoon.
• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: Weeklong camp running August 10–14, 2026
New Native Theatre’s focus is on nurturing and developing Native American artists. The Youth Theater Summer Camp is dedicated to fostering confidence, creativity, and theatrical talent in Native community youth, culminating in a performance on Friday afternoon. The camp is currently accepting registrations for Native community youth in South Minneapolis entering 1st through 5th grade. Based in the Twin Cities, New Native Theatre engages in collaborations with Native artists and Native organizations of varying artistic disciplines and presents Native American productions from around North America.
New Native Theatre was created in 2009 by playwright Rhiana Yazzie, who serves as Artistic Director and is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. The company has an open door policy, which means that any Native community member at any level can come learn and work with the company, and company ages have ranged from three years old to 76. The organization states that its main focus is on Native adults because of the long history of determent from pursuing a career in theatre, and that no other company in the Twin Cities, currently or in the past, has consistently provided training and opportunities for Native artists in the frequency, cultural sensitivity, and success that New Native Theatre has done in only fifteen years.
