About
Young Dance Programs include dance classes, rehearsals, choreography, and performances. Young Dance Company members take weekly classes and rehearse on Saturdays from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m., September through May. Their work is presented in venues throughout the year and in a season finale concert each spring.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly classes with Saturday rehearsals from September through May
Since 1987, Young Dance has encouraged youth in the community to build body and spirit through the art of dance. Its mission is to transform lives through movement. Young Dance offers classes and strategic partnerships with schools, libraries, and community organizations.
The Young Dance Company frames its annual season around a theme that immerses dancers in artistic inquiry and produces innovative performances. Dancers work with professional artists to investigate and collaborate on choreography for the selected theme. The 2024/25 Performance Season theme is “Inner Connectivity, Outer Expressivity,” and the 2025/26 Performance Season theme is “Body as Voice.”
Young Dance describes itself as an inclusive community where creativity flourishes and states that every body is capable of creative expression. It encourages personal and artistic excellence through diverse forms of dance. Social justice is an embedded component of its classes and organization. Healthy somatic dance practice is grounded in a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Young Dance states that the creative process is a model for civil discourse.
The leadership team includes Artistic Director Anat Shinar; Young Dance Company Co-Associate Director and Teaching Artist Brian Evans; and Artistic Director of Upstream Arts Matt Guidry. The Camille “Cici” Blanchette Memorial Scholarship honors teens who want to explore artistic expression through dance and supports their participation in any Young Dance program. BIPOC teens and those who have an interest in diverse areas of art are encouraged to apply for the Camille “Cici” Blanchette Memorial Scholarship.
Young Dance has T-shirts and other merchandise for purchase through an online store, including pants, shirts, and sweatshirts in various styles and sizes, all made to order. One parent shared that “Young Dance teachers were relentlessly supportive and inspiring, accommodating but also challenging our child to grow.” Another testimonial states that “Young Dance helps create some of the strongest, self-aware young people I’ve ever met. Whether these dancers ever pursue a future in dancing or not, the foundation of respect, responsibility” is part of their experience.
