Missionary Athletes International is a Gospel-centered ministry that introduces people to Jesus Christ, teaches them to follow Him, and empowers them as leaders through the global environment of soccer. Its main methods of evangelism and discipleship have been the organizing of soccer teams, conducting soccer camps, and taking short-term soccer tours overseas, supported by clinics, school programs, inner city ministries, and leader training. The organization’s virtues are Joy, Integrity, Faithfulness, and Courage, and its vision is to see lives transformed through teams that motivate people to follow Christ. The vision for using soccer in this way led to the inception of Missionary Athletes International by Tim Conrad in La Habra, California in 1983, and the ministry has entered its fourth decade continuing to pursue its mission to “Glorify God and see lives transformed by sharing the message of Jesus Christ through the global environment of soccer.”
Over time, Missionary Athletes International has developed multiple ministry offices and divisions. Tim Conrad began the work in 1983, and Dave Irby became the first full-time staff member in the fall of 1986. Jon and Ruthie Ortlip headed the first divisional ministry office outside of the Los Angeles area in Bolton, Northern England. Brian and Chris Davidson opened the third ministry office in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1991. Bill and Lisa Galipault led the fourth ministry location in the Czech Republic, opened in 1993. Rick and Janice McKinley led the fifth office opened in Wheaton, Illinois in 1997. Missionary Athletes International has 6 Divisions in the United States located in Southern California, Charlotte (North Carolina), Chicago (Illinois), the NC Triad, Phoenix (Arizona), and Orlando (Florida), and it operates teams through divisions in eight major metropolitan areas: Charlotte (NC), Chicago (IL), NC Triad, Southern California, Phoenix (AZ), Orlando (FL), Lexington (KY), and Philadelphia (PA).
Missionary Athletes International uses soccer to create teams that influence people for Christ through a combination of soccer excellence, authentic community, ministry engagement, and spiritual growth. The organization has partnered with like-minded churches and organizations across the globe to create soccer ministry opportunities for hundreds of coaches and teams and thousands of players. Missionary Athletes International became a charter member of the global sports network in 1985 and has been a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability since 1989.
