About

Kids & Family Programs include fun, hands-on classes for children of all ages, from newborns through high school. These programs take place alongside other offerings such as school, homeschool, and scout field trips, camps and mini-camps, and tour and explore activities. Families visiting for Kids & Family Programs can also find options like picnicking, a summer art exhibit, and the Sounds of a Summer Night concert series.

• Ages: Newborn–18 years old

Reeves-Reed Arboretum was founded as an arboretum in 1974 and maintains three gardens as closely as possible to their original appearance to retain their historic footprint. The property includes natural woodlands, open vistas, and formal gardens that exemplify the Country Place movement of the early 20th century, and visitors can see the tallest tulip poplar in Summit. Picnicking on the grounds is limited to groups of 10 people or fewer, follows a carry in carry out policy, and does not allow dogs.

The organization’s mission is to engage, educate, and enrich its visitors so they become better stewards of nature and the environment through the care and use of a historic estate and garden. Leadership and staff roles include an Executive Director, a Director of Education, a Director of Horticulture and Facilities, environmental educators, horticulture staff, a Rental and Events Coordinator, and a Volunteer Coordinator, among others. Reeves-Reed Arboretum is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, and several of its plants have received the Montine McDaniel Freeman Horticulture Medal, the Garden Club of America’s Plant of the Year award for native plants.

Community events at the Arboretum include a variety of special annual events that bring people together around nature, as well as offerings like cream tea and a summer art exhibit. Seasonal features have included goats from Green-Goats Farm in Rhinebeck, New York, which return in October. Visitors have described the gardens and trails as beautiful, mentioning azaleas, flowering trees, columbine, peonies, iris, and the daffodil bowl, and one parent noted that a child enjoyed roaming through a story book trail.
