About
Capital District YMCA Youth Programs include day camps, preschool, early childhood care, childcare, and before- and after-school care for school-age kids. The program also offers after-school programs, teen programs, leadership programs such as Youth & Government and Black & Latino Achievers, and activities like swim lessons, pickleball, group exercise classes, and personal training. Families can also access Child Watch, Adult enrichment programs, and special events and initiatives such as an Indoor Triathlon series, Camp Chingachgook Benefit Concert, 4th Annual Glenville YMCA Dine to Donate, Pedaling for Parkinson’s, LIVESTRONG®, Circle of Champs, food drives for local pantries, Basket Brigade, and Running Start.
The childcare programs are licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services. The Capital District YMCA states that its mission is to support, engage, and strengthen the Capital Region community through programs and partnerships focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Its history includes a program that began at the Albany YMCA in 1936 and grew into a nationwide initiative connecting young people with democracy through hands-on learning. The organization reports delivering $2 million in impact across the Capital Region each year, including $500,000 in scholarships and programs in areas such as youth development, safety around water, and hunger relief, and notes that scholarships are used so low-income youth have tools to pursue their best possible future. Community efforts include food drives for local pantries, Basket Brigade providing meals to over 1,200 families each Thanksgiving, Running Start distributing school supplies and clothing to more than 800 kids before each school year, and Circle of Champs serving over 150 families of children facing life-threatening illnesses.
