The Buffalo Zoo was established in 1875, and the Buffalo Zoological Gardens is the third oldest institution of its kind in the United States, tracing its history to 1870 when Jacob E. Bergtold presented a pair of deer to the City of Buffalo. The Zoo’s mission is to provide the general public with an educationally, culturally and recreationally significant community resource through the advancement and encouragement of the science of zoology, conservation of the world’s wildlife, and innovative exhibition of diverse species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The Zoo’s philosophy is to exhibit animals and plants in ecological habitats and geographical arrangements that represent the biomes of the world, and its programs focus on providing visitors with a better understanding of the natural world, how animals relate to each other, to their environment and to humankind, and on presenting animals to increase awareness for the importance of conservation.
The Buffalo Zoo includes features such as M&T Bank Rainforest Falls, a fully enclosed South American exhibit providing a four-season attraction, and the Delta Sonic Heritage Farm. The Zootique gift shop is a 3,000 square foot shop renovated from a historic children’s barn and is located next to the main entrance. Through a partnership with KultureCity, guests can request sensory bags at admissions that include noise-reducing headphones, sunglasses, fidgets, visual cue cards, and a KultureCity VIP lanyard; these bags are free, require a license in exchange, and must be returned to admissions at the end of each visit. Rentals such as single strollers, double strollers, motorized scooters, and wheelchairs are available and require a form of photo identification or a deposit in addition to the rental cost.
The Buffalo Zoo has partnerships with hotels in the Buffalo Region, is a partner of KultureCity, and has received support from community groups including the Rotary Club of Buffalo, which funded the Children’s Zoo project, and the Naval Reserve, which provided assistance for Zoo improvements.
