The Youth Mentoring Services mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become productive, responsible, and caring citizens. In 1971, a group of professionals and community residents associated with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department met to discuss the needs of area children and youth, and in March 1973 the organization was chartered by the State of New York as a private, non-profit youth serving agency known as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara County. In November 2013, the organization’s name changed to Youth Mentoring Services, and since 1973 it has extended its reach in Niagara County through a variety of group based programs. Youth Mentoring Services has been a nationally accredited mentoring program since 2017. In 2018, a partnership started with the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers, resulting in an increase of site-based mentoring at two new sites. Youth Mentoring Services is financially supported by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the United Way of Greater Niagara, private foundations, individual donors, and fund-raising efforts, and its annual golf tournament charity fundraiser netted over $49,000 in 2019. The organization depends solely on community support to further its mission and is extremely grateful for community donations of school supplies, personal care products, new or gently used clothing, and household items. Youth Mentoring Services addresses the needs of school aged children and youth ages 5–19 who live in risk and their families by providing activities and other resources, and serves ethnically diverse children from disadvantaged circumstances by engaging them in activities that foster their growth. Youth Mentoring Services partners with the YWCA of Niagara and other agencies to provide interactive workshops in after-school programs. In 2018, a partnership with the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers resulted in an increase of site-based mentoring at two new sites. Youth Mentoring Services is beyond thrilled to celebrate over 50 years of service and served 1,469 children and their families in 2024.
