Youth Mentoring Services began in 1973 as a private, non-profit youth serving agency originally known as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara County and adopted its current name in 2013. The stated mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The organization notes that it is nationally accredited as a mentoring program since 2017 and is beyond thrilled to celebrate over 50 years of service. It serves ethnically diverse children from disadvantaged circumstances through activities and other resources, and it is described as the only youth-focused agency that serves children of both genders, county-wide, with no fee for service or dues assessed, depending solely on community support.

Youth Mentoring Services reports that it has extended its reach in Niagara County since 1973 through a variety of group-based programs and has increased services throughout the year with Summer camperships, the Summer Food Service Program, WNY Food Bank nutritious snacks and beverages, Tools for Schools, Santa Sac, and special agency events. In 2022, Youth Mentoring Services partnered with Family Focus, Rotary Club, The Chapel, Emmanual United Methodist Church, Redman Club, Northtown Boys & Girls Club, and other community agencies and individuals to assist 394 children with school supplies. The organization partners with the YWCA of Niagara and other agencies to provide interactive workshops in after-school programs. Youth Mentoring Services accepts school supplies, personal care products, new or gently used clothing, and household items, and notes that its annual golf tournament charity fundraiser netted over $49,000 in 2019.
