The Putnam Arts Council is a not-for-profit arts service organization chartered in 1963 by the New York State Department of Education. Its mission states that it is the voice for the arts in Putnam County and that it maintains a leadership role in promoting, fostering, and perpetuating the visual, performing, and literary arts in the county and surrounding areas. The organization’s leadership includes Executive Director and President Joyce Picone, Regrant Coordinator and Office Administrator Mary Beth Becker, Chairperson Carlos Passi, Vice President Dawn Willis, Secretary Alex Lindquist, and Members at Large Charles Albertario, Nancy Faulds, James T. Meyer, Beryl Polin, Jim Scully, and Helen Senko. The Putnam Arts Council, in collaboration with the county and other local organizations, is developing initiatives to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, with public support provided by Putnam County Government and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor’s office and the New York State Legislature. One feature of the program space is that it was originally a turn-of-the-century barn and once the studio of cartoonist Bud Fisher, who created “Mutt and Jeff,” the first syndicated cartoon for the Chicago Tribune. PAC classes are described as having small class sizes and programs designed for all ages and skill levels.
