The Mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The organization serves youth ages 6 to 18 in five clubhouses at MLK School, Mont Pleasant, Rotterdam, Steinmetz Homes and Yates Village, and also offers other programs including Job Junction and six after-school programs at Schenectady High School, Mont Pleasant Middle School, Oneida, Central Park, Keane, and Lincoln. Diverse program activities allow youth to choose programs of interest to them on a daily basis, and activities are generally carried out in individual, small group (structured), and large group (drop-in or unstructured) formats. The Clubs are open when children need them the most, including after school, school vacations, snow days, school half-days, and all summer, and there is a special place for teens at “The Club.” Clubhouses are described as places where children can go and feel accepted and comfortable anytime there is a need, and homework can be finished at the Boys & Girls Club.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady reports being the largest agency provider of services to the youth who need them most in Schenectady County, serving over 3,300 members and reaching over 12,700 total youth in 2015. The organization notes that members are on their way to becoming tech experts through Club Tech and are staying healthy thanks to Triple Play. Full-time professional leadership is supplemented by part-time workers and volunteers. Membership requires no proof of good character, and no child is turned away based on inability to pay, with numerous scholarships offered throughout the year.
Community involvement includes partnerships with Lowes and Synthesis, as well as the Fall Fling & Auction, described as a premier fundraiser where the community unites for Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady. The organization also teaches a Career Exploration Workshop at Schenectady County Community College for all students in Summer Youth Employment.
