Lorain County Metro Parks Educational Programs are part of the Lorain County Metropolitan Park District’s efforts to offer educational and recreational programs on a wide variety of topics. Since 1986, the number of programs offered by the Naturalist Department has grown from 386 to over 1,600. The Park District strives to offer programs county-wide for all ages and abilities.

The Lorain County Metropolitan Park District was created in 1957 by the Lorain County Probate Court under the authority of Ohio's Park District Law of 1917. The Park District was established for the responsible use, enjoyment, and accessibility of every citizen of Lorain County, and it acquires land to promote and demonstrate the wise use of natural resources. It strives to preserve and create a diversity of ecosystems while providing educational and recreational opportunities that are compatible with and promote conservation of these resources. Through these programs, citizens of Lorain County experience diverse offerings related to the natural and cultural resources of the county, along with a wide variety of recreational opportunities. The Park District has steadily grown to over 9,000 acres and is supported by a 1.6-mill levy property tax, earned income, and a variety of sponsors and gifts, with capital improvements financed by maintaining operating costs below annual revenues and using grants, donations, and trusts. Through the generous contributions of individuals, groups, corporations, and foundations, the Park District provides a variety of services and facilities beyond the limitations of its tax levy.
