Summer camps serve students from preschool through middle school and include a wide range of creative, exploratory, and active options. The Marylhurst School is a progressive, independent school for students in preschool through 8th grade, where integrated art, music, Spanish, and physical education are part of the school program. The school was founded in 1972, expanded to primary grades in 2012 after 40 years of early childhood education, and graduated its first 8th grade class in 2018. It was established as a lab school at Marylhurst University and later became an independent, progressive learning community.
The leadership team includes Head of School Leif Gustavson, Director of Enrollment Allison Fredette, Director of Development Suzanne Tye, Learning Support & Extracurricular Program Coordinator Heather Botcheos, and Office Manager Alex Migliaccio. The Marylhurst School states that it practices progressive education through experiential learning and respect for the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of the student, and that children develop a foundation for lifelong learning, problem-solving, and working within a diverse community. Marylhurst is a partner school with the Progressive Education Network, is accredited as a subscriber school member of the Northwest Association of Independent Schools, is licensed by the Oregon Department of Education Child-care division, is recognized as a federal nonprofit 501(c)3, and is ranked a 2026 Best School in Oregon.
Marylhurst is a partner school with the Progressive Education Network, and Electronic Music Club camps are offered by an independent organization renting space on the Marylhurst campus and operating in alignment with Marylhurst’s policies and expectations for safety, supervision, and student wellbeing. The Marylhurst School states that it admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin and does not discriminate on that basis in its programs and policies. The school states that it commits to active anti-racism practices, facilitating inclusion and belonging, and working toward social and environmental justice. The land acknowledgment was created through a collaborative process with middle school students in spring 2021 and is described by the school as a living document.
