Metropolitan Youth Symphony states that every student deserves access to music education, regardless of their background or economic circumstance. The program describes itself as a welcoming community of students, families, conductors, coaches, teachers, supporters, and volunteers, and as a safe space for all students. It states that it does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, veteran or military status, sexual orientation including gender expression or identity, or the presence of any mental or physical disability in its employment, programs and activities.

One student says that playing with the group makes them look forward to every Saturday and that it feels like having a place in their community. Another student says they like playing music with a band at their level and that they like performing at concerts. Other comments thank Metropolitan Youth Symphony for providing an outlet to make new friends and play music, for having a place for everybody no matter age, skill level, or instrument, and for offering orchestra experiences and tuition assistance to students who might not otherwise have them. A parent notes that their child has been playing in the Concert Orchestra since September 2013 and that the weekly rehearsals are not a chore because of the music chosen for the group. The organization states that it is excited to transform its new building into a gathering place for young musicians, music educators, performers, and the greater arts community.
