ASCEND Youth Summer Camps include activities such as bouldering, top-rope climbing, roped climbing, yoga, slacklining, and games. Activities vary by camp session but generally include lots of bouldering, roped climbing, yoga, games, slacklining, and more. All campers receive a climbing camp shirt and camp poster.
• Ages: 6–16 years old
• Schedule: Summer camps run Monday through Friday, with full day camps from 9am–3pm and half day camps from 9am–12pm.
Camps are designed to grow strong minds and bodies in the region's youth. Caring, experienced ASCEND counselors and trained, professional climbing instructors guide children through fun and developmentally appropriate activities. Dedicated and experienced coaches are staffed at a low child to coach ratio for lots of small group activities and personalized attention. Camps are open to climbers of all abilities, and no experience is necessary.
In 2011, friends and climbing partners Alex, Paul, and Aaron took their shared passion for climbing and community and built ASCEND Pittsburgh. ASCEND describes itself as more than a gym — a third place where people come to recharge, reconnect, and rediscover what makes them feel strong. ASCEND is locally founded and locally rooted, funded by more than 30 local family and friend investors and supported by local financing.
ASCEND fosters an equitable, holistic, community-based, climbing, fitness, and yoga experience and exists to bring people together through movement and shared experience. ASCEND supports sustainable access, conservation, and responsible stewardship of climbing areas throughout their region, supports underrepresented populations in the outdoor industry and recreation, and supports policies and initiatives that strengthen economic well-being, healthcare access, and quality of life in the communities they serve. ASCEND partners with organizations including Southwestern Pennsylvania Climbers Coalition, Explorers Club of Pittsburgh, Venture Outdoors, BikePGH, Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, NRAC, Climbing Wall Association, Climbing Business Journal, and Access Fund.
