About
The Gene Team Summer Program is a four-week program where students engage in cutting-edge biological research and develop laboratory skills through hands-on activities. Participants are immersed in a current research project from a lab at Pitt and take part in state-of-the-art biomedical research projects. The program also includes college preparatory mentoring, weekly sessions that provide strategies and skills for applying for college, and opportunities for conversations and public engagement.
• Ages: 14–18 years old
• Schedule: Four-week summer program, Monday–Friday, generally 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
• Price: Students receive a $1000 honorarium, paid at the end of the program.
The Gene Team Summer Program was founded in 2006 and has been accredited by the Middles States Association. Pitt faculty are in the lab each day for additional support and assistance. The program is offered to students from high schools within the Pittsburgh region and requires that each participant has completed one year of high school Biology. Because of the team structure, each participant may miss no more than two days of the summer session and may not miss the first day or the last two days of the program. The program will have off on July 3, 2026. Applications are due at the end of March, interviews are held in April, and applicants are notified by mid May. Free PRT bus passes are available.
The Gene Team mission states that it is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students can engage in cutting-edge biological research and receive college preparatory mentoring, and it aims to broaden participation in science by actively supporting students with resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to thrive in scientific careers. Gene Team is connected to the Department of Biological Sciences, which aims to enhance knowledge of the biological world within the local community, including K–12 students. The Gene Team Science Corps is made up of Gene Team alumni who return as science ambassadors; through hands-on activities, conversations, and public engagement, they connect with students and community audiences to share their passion for biology and show how science is relevant, creative, and accessible, and their experiences help spark curiosity, build confidence, and make pathways in STEM visible. Families can also view Gene Team-at-home final projects from 2020 and 2021, including the Gene Team 2020 and Gene Team 2021 YouTube channels.
