About
Brookings Skating Academy offers group ice-skating classes that include figure skating, beginning hockey skating skills, adaptive skating, and skating lessons. The program also offers specific classes for adult beginners and teen beginners, and skaters may participate in figure skating competitions.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are offered in a 4-week format, with most classes meeting twice a week for 30 minutes per day.
Classes are taught by certified Professional Members of the Ice Sports Industry (ISI) who are Coach Members of the Brookings Figure Skating Club. The program uses ISI's Ice Skating Program curriculum and skill ladder, which has taught millions of people to ice skate for more than 50 years. Instructor-to-student ratios are generally 1:6 or 1:10, depending on the class, and a waiting list option is available when maximum enrollment is reached. Classes and availability are subject to change based on registration numbers, and there are no make-up classes or refunds in the event of class cancellation due to inclement weather. The Brookings Skating Academy director and coaches evaluate skill levels during the first week and may make changes to group assignments.
Brookings Skating Academy is powered by the Brookings Figure Skating Club (BFSC) in partnership with the City of Brookings Park & Recreation Department, and BFSC is a member of the Ice Sports Industry (ISI). BFSC partners with the Brookings Park & Recreation Department for group lessons following the ISI curriculum. The BFSC leadership team includes Chris Buus (President), Dustin Louwagie (Vice President), Aleycia Gerlach (Secretary), Jodie Louwagie (Treasurer), Laura Aspinall (Membership Chairperson), Janice Nielsen (Fundraising Chairperson), Vicki Dubbelde (Competition Chairperson), Ice Show Chairperson Stacey Moyer, and BFSC competition liaison coach Katie Bratberg. The BFSC mission states that it is dedicated to promoting the sport of amateur figure skating, providing continual education and training opportunities for its members and instilling good sportsmanship, and that it provides programs and facilities that support and encourage each individual to achieve their goals in a safe and healthy environment.
Figure skates or hockey skates are required for participation, and skates may be borrowed from the skate room and must be returned each day after class. Helmets are encouraged for anyone participating in ice skating and are required for some classes, but helmets are not provided or available to borrow at the rink; bike helmets from home are acceptable. Membership in the ISI program includes earning colorful badges for each completed level, monthly issues of the Recreational Ice Skating magazine, and coverage by ISI individual member accident insurance with a $25,000 medical/dental expense maximum and a $1,000 deductible per injury. Families of BFSC members participate in a volunteer points program with specified point requirements and a deposit check system.
