About
SoDak Spurs Grassroots Soccer Program offers grassroots soccer with weekly one-hour practices and weekly games on Saturdays. Players take part in small-sided 4v4 and 5v5 games, with each practice ending in small-sided games. Players sign up and are assigned to a team, and grassroots volunteer parent-coaches are guided and mentored by SoDak Spurs Director of Coaching Paul O'Brien.
• Ages: 3–11 years old
• Schedule: Each team trains one day a week followed by a game each Saturday, with a spring session from April through May, a fall session from August through October, and an indoor winter session from December through January.
• Price: Cost: $90
The season described runs from Monday April 13th to May 21st, with Saturday game days on April 18th, April 25th, May 2nd, May 9th, and May 16th, and Saturday game times at either 9:00am or 10:30am. Boys 2020/21 and Boys 2016/17 train Monday at 6:00pm, Boys 2018/19 train Tuesday at 6:00pm, and Boys 2014/15 train Thursday at 6:00pm; Girls 2020/21 train Monday at 6:00pm, Girls 2018/19 train Tuesday at 6:00pm, and Girls 2016/17 and Girls 2014/15 train Thursday at 6:00pm. Each team’s last round of games is on its assigned training day (May 18th, May 19th, or May 20th) at 6:00pm, and coed age groups are only created when there are not enough registrations to split genders.
The program is age-appropriate for boys and girls and follows a split-season format with a summer break. It focuses on fun, individual player development, increased confidence, better ball control with maximum touches, ball skills and movement, improved balance and coordination, running mechanics, and allowing playing the game to be the main teacher. Each practice finishes with small-sided games that harness teamwork, introduce basic tactical concepts, and develop decision-making.
SoDak Spurs Grassroots Soccer Program states that it will focus more on player development in a fun, safe environment and shares the belief of the U.S. Soccer Federation and other worldwide soccer federations of player development over winning at youth levels. The program states that every player benefits from playing in every game, emphasizes development of players and teams over winning, and states that soccer can help build self-esteem, create lasting relationships, and teach life lessons. It also states that it will give children the opportunity to be involved in the world’s biggest sport, provide them with a learning environment, teach teamwork and sportsmanship, make soccer fun, ignite a lifelong passion for the game, and create a pathway to the competitive club soccer program.
The program includes a coaches kick-off meeting and a coaching manual for grassroots volunteer parent-coaches. Scholarship requests must be emailed to [email protected]. The program is presented by Brookings Billboard, Culvers, and The Sequoia Group.
The SoDak Spurs Grassroots Soccer Program mission is to inspire players and coaches to achieve their individual highest potential by providing soccer environments, opportunities, and pathways while enabling them to become lifelong supporters of the game. The leadership team includes Paul O’Brien as Director of Coaching and Reece Weber as Executive Director. Paul O'Brien holds a United States Soccer Federation Academy Director License, United States Soccer Federation National A, B, and C Licenses, and United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma and Goalkeeper Level I and II Diplomas.
