Great After-School Place (G.A.P.)

About
Great After-School Place (G.A.P.) offers recreational, educational, and developmental activities that have included a Nutrition club visit, a Marshmallow Science Project, a Winter Art Project, building a Block Tower, and building a race car. Children are offered a planned program of activities, along with nutritious breakfasts and snacks, and staff account for their whereabouts after school and during the summer. Children are bussed via the Brookings School District and are chaperoned by a G.A.P. staff member.
• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: Hours available are from the time school lets out for the day until 6PM.
• Price: An updated fees schedule is available at each site, through parent letters, and on the registration form.
The G.A.P. serves children in grades K–6 enrolled in the Brookings schools during the before and after-school hours, and preference is given to children enrolled in schools within the Brookings School District. Children who attend other schools in Brookings are enrolled if openings allow, and during the summer, care is provided for any child living in Brookings or whose parents work in the Brookings community. The morning program is available for children in kindergarten through 14 years of age, and the after school and summer programs are available for children in kindergarten through 6th grade. G.A.P. accepts Child Care Assistance, offers scholarships by application, and works with all students no matter their situation or background.
The G.A.P. is licensed by the State of South Dakota Department of Social Services. The mission of the G.A.P. is to develop the youth of the community by strengthening life skills in a safe, positive environment. The G.A.P. coordinator and staff are mandated by SDCL 26-10-10 to report any suspected incident involving child abuse or neglect to the South Dakota Department of Social Services and the local police department. The program can provide care for up to 400 children.
The G.A.P. main office is located in Faith Reformed Church, and children attend at the following sites: kindergarten at The First United Methodist Church, and additional sites at Dakota Prairie Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, Medary Elementary, and Camelot Intermediate. Care for junior kindergarten and kindergarten children whose school of attendance is Dakota Prairie is located at the First United Methodist Church. The leadership team includes a Kindergarten Site Supervisor (Kristi Rystrom), Dakota Prairie Site Supervisor (Koby Leisinger), Hillcrest Site Supervisor (Morgan Clites), Medary Site Supervisor (Nicole Covrig), and Camelot Site Supervisor (Taylor Schneider).
