About

The Nature Bus School is a small, nature-based educational program where children take a daily guided nature hike and practice mindfulness breathwork. The program includes reading, math, writing, science, social studies, art, and music, with afternoons set aside for all-age, project-based learning based on topics that emerge from children’s curiosity. Core academics use readiness-based groups, with Montessori hands-on materials for math and Wonder-based Literacy in a Waldorf-inspired style, and reading is explicitly taught.

The Nature Bus School is a mobile private school and intentionally small, serving just 16 children in Pre-K through 1st Grade and expanding one grade level each year. The program is built on 10+ years of trusted outdoor learning and has 200+ 5-star reviews. Children explore different environments throughout the week while the bus, teachers, daily rhythm, and expectations stay consistent, and learning happens outdoors and in the local community. The Nature Bus School curricula are inspired by Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, and Forest School traditions and align with Virginia Foundation Blocks, NAEYC best practices, the North American Association for Environmental Education, Virginia Standards of Learning, and Core Knowledge. Educators are a mother-daughter team that includes a Licensed Virginia Teacher (PreK–6) and an Environmental Scientist from Duke University, and the leadership team includes Alaurah, School Administrator and Assistant Educator. The program provides a 5-point harness booster seat on the bus, teachers assist with added layers of clothing as needed, and children are dressed for the weather. The stated mission is to be a vehicle for transformative, shared nature experiences and to nurture people’s affinity for the natural world.
