North City AAU & Basketball Training fields competitive AAU teams from 4th grade (10U) through 11th grade (17U) for both boys and girls and offers training programs to players of any skill level. Training sessions are catered based on age, player skill, and group size, and year-round training options focus on increasing strength, speed, and individual offensive and defensive skills. The program competes in top tournaments in Washington, Oregon, California, and Las Vegas, NV for top teams and was featured in the Everett Herald.
The program was formed in 2010 with one team of 8th graders and expanded to two teams in 2011, four teams in 2012, and eight teams in both 2013 and 2014. In 2015, the program had teams from 5th grade through 11th grade, fielded 15 AAU teams in 2016, 16 teams in 2017, 14 teams in 2018, and 16 teams in 2019. The 2020/2021 seasons were minimized due to the COVID pandemic. In 2022, the program fielded boys teams across all 4th grade through 11th grade, added girls teams from 4th grade through 8th grade in 2023, and in 2024 expanded the girls program to 15U/16U teams.
Sgt. Mike Lawson is one of the founders and lead trainers and built an innovative core strength training program for the teams. The mission of North City AAU & Basketball Training is stated as: “It takes a village to raise a basketball player. It has been our mantra since 2010, when the program was formed with one team. We focus on providing quality training and AAU competition to help provide a well-rounded experience for basketball players to grow. Helping our players improve through their physical and mental game continues to be the focus as we look towards the future.” The program notes that from 2010–2012 it offered some of the hardest and most rewarding training in the area.
As part of its community involvement, the organization is conducting a free community event on June 16th from 2pm–5pm to teach the game of basketball and provide skills training to local kids. This event is also being held to help raise funds for their 17U team that will be traveling out of state to compete in front of college coaches and try to earn an athletic scholarship.
