The American Diabetes Association has been providing support and experiences through camps and family retreats since 1949, and Camp Needlepoint was established in 1957. The camp is described as a lifeline for children living with diabetes to develop skills related to social connections, self-respect, independence, self-confidence, and awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, blood glucose (blood sugar) management, and emotional wellbeing. ADA Camp focuses on skill development for managing diabetes, including decision-making related to eating plans, physical activity, emotional wellbeing, and managing blood glucose (blood sugar). ADA Camp provides professional care in a medically safe environment.
The Leadership Development Program is an immersive two-week experience running from August 9 to August 21, 2026, including the weekend, and includes an offsite camping trip. The Counselor-in-Training program for age 17 offers training in leadership, character development, and youth-working skills. Camp staff may include licensed medical professionals and students, and licensed medical professionals and students are listed as volunteer opportunities. ADA Camp also offers opportunities for non-medical positions to work or volunteer at camp.
YMCA Camp St. Croix, the host site, is accredited by the American Camp Association. Thanks to the support of sponsors, partners, and donations, the ADA subsidizes 50% of the full camp price for the sponsored price option. Flexible pricing options include Full Price, ADA Sponsored Price (50% of full camp price), and additional Financial Assistance for qualifying families. Financial assistance is available, nearly half of families receive financial assistance to cover part or the full cost of camp, and no child will be turned away from camp due to cost.
