About

Hoot Reading Online 1:1 Literacy Tutoring provides online literacy tutoring through a web-based app that replicates in-person instruction. The program offers one-on-one structured literacy instruction, including reading intervention programs that use the Hoot Reading Assessment, assessment-informed lessons, and ongoing progress monitoring. Students take part in oral and word fluency practice, as well as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and verbal reasoning instruction.

• Ages: 5–13 years old

All Hoot tutors are certified teachers with a B.Ed or higher and extensive classroom experience. Tutoring starts with the Hoot Reading Assessment and uses personalized plans based on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension, with teachers tracking skills at key checkpoints and using data to personalize every session. The program uses data-driven one-on-one structured literacy lessons developed in accordance with the Science of Reading, with assessment and progress monitoring every few weeks, regular reporting, and live meetings. Reported outcomes include students achieving three times the reading growth of their peers, a 152% boost in oral fluency, an 86% boost in word fluency in a few months, and 88% of students demonstrating growth, based on work with more than 10,000 students, 260,000+ reading lessons, and 300+ schools.

Hoot Reading’s mission is “Changing Children’s Lives Through Literacy.” The program partners with districts and schools to close literacy gaps through flexible tutoring programs at school or at home and is used by families and schools across North America. Hoot Reading offers high-impact, one-on-one, evidence-based literacy instruction for K–8, with reading intervention programs that follow a structured literacy approach, are driven by data, and are personalized to each reader.

The program uses research-backed pedagogy and technology, including a web-based app designed and developed by leaders in child education and incubated in a project at the Nokia Research Lab with Sesame Workshop. The interface is designed to replicate in-person instruction with features that enhance learning and engagement, and the technology is built specifically for teaching reading remotely in an online environment. The Hoot Library includes more than 1,500 instructional texts, including decodables aligned with a proprietary phonics scope and sequence and authentic, multi-genre texts from trusted publishers to support language comprehension.

Hoot Reading was awarded the Tutoring Design Program Badge by Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator and earned a “Strong” evidence rating from Evidence for ESSA. The program is described as scalable to schools and districts of all sizes, with flexible lesson schedules and resources for families to support engagement and enrollment. A district administrator states, “Our partnership with Hoot Reading exceeds our expectations from student achievement to implementation and I highly recommend them to other districts.”
