About

Saint Croix Sailing School Summer Camps offer week-long full-day sailing camps that include sailing and racing. The program also offers community membership sailing, private sailing lessons, group sailing outings, adult sailing courses, and ASA-101 Adult Keelboat Certification.

• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Week-long full-day sailing camps

The Saint Croix Sailing School is a registered non-profit community sailing center open to all, with weekly camps for youth sailors and a focus on children and teens from ages 7 through high school. Kids ages 7–13 and under 120 pounds are directed to take “OPTI” courses. Community Membership gives participants access to sail the fleet of boats at their leisure, and private lessons are tailored by certified instructors to the student’s needs, with group outings offered to explore the Saint Croix River Valley.

Adult Keelboat Certification ASA-101 is taught by certified American Sailing Association instructors, and all instructors follow US Sailing curriculum and complete Red Cross CPR and first aid training. The school states that safety is the number one priority, with a water-front director staffing the shore facility at all times while classes are underway, including monitoring real-time weather radar, and moving all kids and boats off the water to a secure storm shelter if conditions become questionable. Every sailor is required to have a personal flotation device (PFD), also called a life jacket.

The mission of Saint Croix Sailing School is to promote the growth of junior and adult sailing in the Saint Croix Valley and nearby communities, focusing on children and teens from ages 7 through high school as well as adults of all ages. The school is dedicated to teaching time-honored and life-long sailing and racing skills on the water, with safety, fun and adventure for all, and states that these skills enable young people to learn teamwork, practice sportsmanship, develop self-reliance and respect nature. The curriculum is structured and developed by US Sailing and is described as engaging kids in fun and entertaining ways, in a positive environment where everyone is respected, encouraged and challenged.

Early in 2008, a group of long-time St. Croix River sailors began planning a sailing school for youth in the area. The organization operates with an all-volunteer board that has made affordable access a priority, using donations to cover equipment costs so class fees can remain low, and it offers scholarships so families can access all programs regardless of financial circumstances. Saint Croix Sailing School is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, an accredited US Sailing Community Sailing Center, follows National On-Water Standards curriculum to encourage boating safety, and is certified Silver by GuideStar. SCSS partners with Sail Away Sailing School for sailing certifications and adult sailing programs, and St. Croix Sailing Club has promoted family-oriented sailing on the St. Croix River since 1974. The organization describes itself as spam-free for its contact list.

The Board of Directors includes Bob Barbian (Chairperson), Tim Tyre (Vice Chairperson), Lynn Gallandat (Treasurer), Joan Gilmore (Curriculum Advisor), Nick Hafner (Director of Operations), Alicia Runquist (Community Board Member), Cami Persson (Community Board Member), and William C. Rowe (Community Board Member), with the Secretary position listed as open. Volunteers include Patrick O’Donnell as Principal Race Officer and a Registrar/Website Administrator.
