Saul and Victoria Mendoza founded San Diego Fencing Center in 2005, and Juan Ignacio Calderón joined as co-owner and Head Coach in 2016. Saul Mendoza is an Olympic fencer who represented Bolivia in the 1984 Summer Games, and the center has a highly qualified and internationally experienced coaching team. The program’s stated goal is to promote the Olympic sport of fencing with programs open to youth, veterans, competitive fencers, and recreational fencers, with doors open to small children and any age and level. The center describes an open and inclusive environment focused on learning, with teamwork at the core of its approach, and views competitions as a way to test and keep improving, using medals and titles as inspiration while naming learning as the real goal. In 2016, the center created the Global Fencing Network, which includes more than 200 fencing clubs in over 40 countries, to collaborate with other clubs that share similar ideas. The program states that fencing is a sport for everybody and that diversity makes the experience richer, and it offers month-to-month participation without a long-term contract.
