Polar Bear Swim Club is led by owner and founder Cristos Birbilis. Cristos is a swimmer, lifeguard, former water polo player, and swim instructor who has been teaching for the past eight years. Cristos graduated with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology (Movement Science) and a Minor in Business at CSUSM. Polar Bear Swim Club started in 2023.
The program offers free access to the pool, locker rooms, and showers with lessons. It focuses on water safety and learning all four strokes. Sibling lessons allow siblings to share a class together while the price stays the same. The program uses SMS and email to confirm lessons, share updates, send lesson reminders, and other lesson-specific messages.
The mission of Polar Bear Swim Club is to provide affordable and quality swim lessons for the community, while assuring students grow comfortable in the water while prioritizing safety. Understanding the financial struggles and hardships in everyday life is stated as the reason for offering flexibility, especially for lower-income families. The stated goal is to deliver lessons and accessibility to all people at an affordable rate.
One parent, Jane, shared that her 6-year-old son previously hated the water and that with Coach Cristos’s help, he has become water safe and now loves to swim every weekend. Another parent, Rebecca, shared that her two children, ages 2 and 3, have loved Cristos as an instructor and described him as very patient and fun for the kids since their first day of swim lessons.
