Camp Brainy Bunch is part of the Education Unlimited, Inc. family of academic summer programs, which launched elementary-age programs as “DaVinci Day Camps” in 2012 and re-branded this division as Camp Brainy Bunch in 2013; by summer 2019, the program expanded to allow campers to explore future career pathways. The program uses fun and academic weekly themes where campers try on new identities each week as young doctors, lawyers, writers, engineers, detectives, inventors, and explorers, with curriculum organized around weekly themes that link academic learning to real life and future careers. Its stated mission is to combine the best parts of school (learning) with the best parts of camp (fun), to combat summer learning loss while making learning fun, and to “Make Learning Awesome” for elementary-age children around the SF Bay Area through a single-subject immersive learning model adapted for 1st–6th grade students using creative, imaginative curriculum and hands-on, engaging activities that foster design thinking and multiple perspectives.
Camp Brainy Bunch offers Bay Area day camps at seven sites for campers entering grades 1–6 and describes itself as a small camp setting where kids can build relationships with adults and new camp pals in an inclusive place where everyone meets someone new and feels included. The teaching staff includes educators who work in education during the school year, with teachers described as highly trained and well educated, and teaching assistants recruited from top universities who serve as teaching assistants, mentors, role models, and ambassadors of fun. Camp Director Alejandra Ceja is a 7th-grade science teacher in San Jose, California, holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Child Development, a Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University, and an elementary multiple-subject teaching credential with bilingual authorization, and she is pursuing a single-subject credential in science after prior roles as a Two-Way Bilingual Immersion teacher and a Teach for America teacher.
