The Sacramento State Aquatic Center was established in 1981 and has been involved with youth programs for over 40 years. Its mission is to provide high quality boating and safety programs through education, recreation, and competition. The Aquatic Center is recognized as the benchmark for boating safety and is a National Boating Instruction Safety Center and a regional boating instruction safety center. The National Safe Boating Council and Western States Boating Administrators Association awarded the Boating Education Advancement Award (BEAA) to the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The Sacramento State Aquatic Center is a cooperative operation of the Associated Students Inc. of California State University, Sacramento, the University Union of Sac State, the California Division of Boating and Waterways, and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. It is part of a national boating safety center program funded by the California State Parks Division of Boating & Waterways, which funds boating facilities, boating safety education, and supports boating law enforcement in California. A portion of the equipment at the center is provided by the Department of Boating and Waterways to enhance boating safety education in California, and the Aquatic Center has been a cooperative effort of California State University, Sacramento, Associated Students Inc., The University Union, California Department of Boating and Waterways, California Department of Parks and Recreation, Bureau of Reclamation, and the community.

The leadership team includes Brian Dulgar (Director), Cindi Dulgar (Associate Director), Heather Wilhelmi (Operations Manager), DeDe Birch (Rowing Manager), Russell Moran (Facilities/Shop Supervisor), Clayton Eckstein (Water Front Supervisor), Katie Ellis (Administrative Specialist), John Tran (Operations Assistant), Emily Jakel (Water Front Program Specialist), and a Weekend Supervisor listed as TBA.

Families are asked to send campers with lunch (in a small cooler, as there is no refrigeration), sun block, a refillable water bottle, lip balm, a beach towel, bathing suit, t-shirt and shorts, a hat or visor, aquatic shoes with a heel strap such as Teva sandals (bare feet are not permitted), sunglasses with floaties or a neck strap, and warm clothes for cool mornings, labeled and brought in a bag. The Aquatic Center is not responsible for lost or stolen articles and does not recommend bringing valuables to camp. Camper packets must be completely filled out with original signatures and brought on the first day of camp; without this, the camper is not eligible to participate in activities. Parents must sign campers in each morning and sign them out each afternoon. Children can be dropped off between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM, camp begins promptly at 8:30 AM, and camper pick up is between 3:45 PM and 4:00 PM at the circle drive, with no pickups permitted between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM. If carpooling, a permission slip form must be filled out listing all campers.
