Kids Under Construction Tutoring was founded in 2009 and has been “Helping Kids Dig Learning Since 2008.” The program opened its first academic studio on 2nd Street in Naples Island, Long Beach in 2009, launched homeschool support tutoring during the 2020–2021 academic year, and expanded again in January 2026 with the opening of a community classroom and tutoring center in Franklin. During the 2023–2024 school year, founder Kristen Wielert Peters taught kindergarten in Williamson County Schools, and in 2024 she began supporting students through private tutoring in Franklin.
Kristen Wielert Peters is the founder and owner of Kids Under Construction and serves as Homeschool Director for Tennessee Prime's Homeschool Academy in Franklin, Tennessee. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from UCLA (2005) and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University, Long Beach (2008), and she completed a two-year Induction Program with Long Beach Unified School District in 2013. Her work has included collaboration with experienced educators and district leaders, and she has served as Secretary of the Naples Island Business Association beginning in 2010.
Kids Under Construction Tutoring uses mastery-based learning plans that build executive functioning, academic skills, and confidence, and all services combine growth mindset and executive functioning work with standards-based academics. The program’s methods aim to diversify learning styles, balance strengths, improve executive function, and work through productive struggles without frustration. A collaborative approach draws on input from parents and teachers, aligns with grade-level academic standards, and includes collaboration with families and other support providers to build long-term growth.
One Long Beach parent, Joni Knapp, shared that Kids Under Construction Tutoring has worked with her family for seven years and described Kristen as guiding, coaching, and empowering students to be critical thinkers, organized scholars, and proactive students. Mentor and LBUSD teacher Kim Watten described Kristen’s lessons as creative, fun, and appropriate for a variety of levels, and stated that what students learn with Kristen transfers to the classroom setting. Another Long Beach parent, Ben Berg, described a one-hour session in which Kristen accomplished more with his daughter than he and his wife had in a month and noted that Kids Under Construction Tutoring became a regularly scheduled part of their home and supported his daughter’s organizational skills.
