About

The Middle School STEM Program uses sailing as a platform for hands-on, integrated learning. Students take part in field trips, onsite sailing-based activities, and underwater robotics projects. Field trips, onsite sailing-based activities, and underwater robotics are described as the cornerstones of the program.

• Ages: 11–14 years old
• Schedule: This program is held on 6 Saturdays during the school year.

The stated goal of the Sailing Foundation’s Middle School STEM Program is to foster an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math through activities related to sailing. The program has been active since 2017. BPSD teachers are certified to teach the US Sailing Reach curriculum, and the sailing coaches are experienced volunteer sailors from the Sailing Foundation and Long Beach Yacht Club.

The Middle School STEM Program is a collaboration among the Sailing Foundation, Long Beach Yacht Club, and the Buena Park School District. The Sailing Foundation works with outreach partners including the Long Beach Yacht Club, its members, and the US Sailing Center, and the Catalina 37 fleet supports youth outreach and STEM education programs through partnerships with local schools and nonprofits. The Heroes Regatta and Patriot Regatta offer sailing experiences to local firefighters, police officers, lifeguards, and active-duty military personnel, and families are invited to view the Patriot Regatta racing and join in post-racing festivities.

A recent participant in the Heroes Regatta said that “it was awesome, from training to the teamwork… Our coaches had us focused and stayed on point the whole time.”
