About
Junior Center of Art and Science offers activities in visual arts, creative coding, carpentry, fashion design, sensory play, coloring, and open studio time. Kids can take part in projects such as block printing, Scrappy Birds Collage, recycled collage creatures, and an upcycling workshop, and can see reptiles get fed every Saturday at noon. The program also hosts a clothing swap, a gallery exhibit, and What We Sow—A Trash Falcon Exhibition.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: 1 week and 2 week full day camps, with free drop-in programming on Saturdays at the LAB and activities offered Tuesday–Saturday between 10am and 4pm
• Price: $400–$600 for Birthday Parties; $250 per session for Field Trips & Workshops; space rental starting at $85 per hour
For after-school enrichment, Junior Center of Art and Science serves ages 6–13, and its 1 week and 2 week full day camps are for ages 6–17. Birthday Parties include art parties and science celebrations for kids ages 5–12. Field trips and workshops can be scheduled at the Center or in classrooms, and space can be rented for events ranging from board retreats to casual wedding receptions.
Projects at Junior Center of Art and Science are led by professional artists and educators. For over two years, the organization has been working on a new look, a new name, and a renewed vision. Its mission states that it cultivates curiosity and creative exploration for youth through the arts and sciences, is dedicated to providing equitable access to programs for youth and their families throughout Oakland and the greater East Bay Area, and harnesses creativity and experiential learning to highlight connections between art and science.
Junior Center of Art and Science serves as host and convener for the Lake Merritt Stewards Initiative, which brings together stewardship groups that work on behalf of Lake Merritt. The What We Sow exhibition invites viewers into a reimagined landscape composed of forgotten remnants of Adams Point, Lakeside Park, and Lake Merritt. For the clothing swap, the program asks participants to bring gently used teens and adult clothing to trade.
