About

Scientific Adventures for Girls Afterschool STEM Programs delivers afterschool STEM classes for TK–6th grade students. The programs use hands-on learning activities in science, technology, engineering, and math, and classes prioritize learning practical skills and applying them creatively. Teachers in these classes use the “6 C's of Being a Scientist” framework: Curious, Creative, Confident, Collaborative, Committed, and Changemaker.

• Ages: 5–11 years old

Scientific Adventures for Girls Afterschool STEM Programs has a special focus on girls of color from low-income families and communities and offers girls-only programs for families who want that option. The organization also provides co-educational classes in library and camp settings. Programs incorporate fun, hands-on learning that fosters girls’ inventiveness and intuition in STEM lessons, and 80% of girls who have attended the afterschool STEM classes report that they cannot wait to come back.

Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) was started by Tiffany Sprague and Courtenay Carr Heuer, who are mothers of young daughters and experienced professionals in nonprofit management. SAfG has served over 10,000 children and families across 37 school sites through STEM programs in the San Francisco East Bay area. SAfG works with families, school districts, after school agencies, corporations, public libraries, politicians, and universities in various ways connected to STEM education, teacher development, volunteering, programming, advising, and on-the-job training for future elementary science teachers. SAfG values inclusiveness and is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

In May 2025, Scientific Adventures for Girls was announced as a California Nonprofit of the Year. One parent shared that her kindergartener “has had so much fun during her time with SAfG” and described her daughter as “a budding scientist,” and thanked the program for its dedication to changing the face of science so it reflects young women like her daughter.
