Growth Mindset Collective – Homeschool Enrichment states its mission as empowering homeschool families by providing enriching, movement-based, nature-centered programs that inspire curiosity, encourage creativity, and build meaningful community. The program follows a parent-led collaboration model with a co-op spirit, is not a drop-off program, and includes small class sizes, with some classes capped at 6–8 students and Jiu Jitsu & STEAM classes limited to 10 students. It offers optional self-defense classes for homeschoolers, an invite-only Kid's Competition Team for students interested in local tournaments, and a focus on anti-bullying basics and bully-proofing through role-play, verbal boundary-setting, and jiu jitsu-based self-defense.
The leadership team includes Sabrina Smith as Program Director and Homeschool Program Leader and Mark Miller as Head Jiu Jitsu Instructor who runs the jiu jitsu program. Sabrina Smith is a homeschooling mom of two, a certified yoga instructor, and an experienced educator with a Master’s in Kinesiology who has taught wellness, swimming, outdoor education, and group fitness in university and homeschool settings, and has taught nutrition, movement, anatomy, and STEAM-based science as a former college-level health and wellness instructor at Cal State East Bay and Saint Mary’s College. Mark Miller is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and lifelong martial artist with more than 20 years of training and teaching experience in the East Bay Area, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Eduardo Rocha (Royler Gracie lineage), a Black Belt in Uechi Ryu Karate under Alan Dollar (Kanbun Uechi Lineage), a homeschool dad, active competitor, and mentor.
Community involvement includes Wild + Free Nature Exploration trips where families gather to hike, play, and learn together in natural spaces throughout Contra Costa County, as well as free, informal Wild and Free gatherings at local parks and preserves that are open to all homeschool families. The program’s parent-led collaboration model includes community events and opportunities for families to volunteer for projects or lead a class.
Parent feedback includes comments that children “come home showing us everything they've learned and telling us all about it” and that “they love it,” with one parent stating that Mark and Sabrina “are great at what they do” and “are the best.” Other parent feedback states that kids “absolutely love Sabrina co-op class and Marks JuJitsu class” and that they “truly care about your kids education and safety,” with recommendations “1000%” to check out the program.
