Firecracker Math was founded in 2011 as a children’s newspaper called the Firecracker Forum, and in the fall of 2011 it launched the Firecracker Math enrichment program for children in grades K–11. In 2013, the program expanded to include Math Summer camps and summer programs at six different sites across the Bay Area, and this summer it is celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of Firecracker Math. The program’s mission is to offer small group and private instruction on extra-curricular math topics and to spark children’s interest in math, deepen their knowledge, and further develop their aptitude and talent in math, with a focus on problem solving and logical reasoning and a curriculum that emphasizes exploration and understanding of mathematical concepts.
Firecracker Math’s leadership team includes Program Director and Teacher Ella Levine, Program Coordinator and Teacher Svetlana Livdan, Administrative Manager Amber DaVisio, and Outreach Manager Sherri Hansell. Classes are taught by well-trained, enthusiastic teachers with advanced degrees in math or science, including teachers with an MS in applied mathematics, Master’s degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, a degree in Math Statistics, a BA degree and PhD in math, and math teaching credentials. The program uses small group sizes to support close teacher-to-student interaction and attention to each child’s needs and pace of learning, and it reports a high rate of returning students who have been taking Firecracker Math classes year after year.
Firecracker Math is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and describes itself as a non-profit organization of passionate, well-trained, and enthusiastic teachers with advanced degrees in math or science. Firecracker Math admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin, and does not discriminate in its admissions policies, financial aid, and educational programs. The organization also hosted free Math Festivals for families, relies on volunteers, and notes that its parent company, Firecracker Forum, relies on donations from individuals and businesses to keep serving the community.
Families can take part in a Virtual Open House where attendees receive 5% off tuition, and there is a Referral Appreciation Program offering a 5% discount off an entire term or summer camp tuition for every referred student who enrolls.
