About

Hip Wah Summer Program offers choral music, instrumental music, dance, martial arts, language, and arts and crafts. Each summer, the program includes a music festival where all campers take part in music and dance activities. The program focuses on music and language alongside other arts activities.

• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Four-week summer session, with orientation on June 13th, camp dates from June 15th to July 10th, a music festival on July 11th, and no camp on July 3rd

For four weeks each summer, children of diverse ethnicities come together and are immersed in a full Chinese experience that ends with a music festival featuring choral and instrumental music, dance, and martial arts. Hip Wah serves entering 1st through 7th graders. While the focus is on Chinese and Chinese-American culture, campers do not have to be Chinese to attend.

Hip Wah was founded in 1984 by parents. The program’s mission is to provide Bay Area children the opportunity to experience and appreciate the rich heritage of the Chinese and Chinese-American people, and to maintain an accessible summer program by keeping it affordable and leveraging community support through parent participation and a volunteer parent board. The program is described as one of the most successful and longest-running Chinese-American summer programs in the country.
