Traditional Martial Arts Center has been dedicated to the teaching of Traditional Japanese Budo (Martial Arts) since 1993. The dojo’s stated mission is that the school is dedicated to the teaching of Traditional Japanese Budo (Martial Arts). Peer Halperin Sensei is the chief instructor and is described as a high ranking traditional martial arts instructor who has been dedicated to studying and teaching Martial Arts for over 30 years. In Karate-do, Peer Halperin Sensei is certified by the American Amateur Karate Federation (AAKF) and is a member of the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF), and in Batto-do he is certified by the International Batto-do Federation (IBF). The dojo offers a free private lesson with the chief instructor as a way to get started, and youth classes are divided into Juniors (ages 4–9) and Teens (ages 10–15). The dojo also offers study of Nakamura-ryu Batto-do focusing on learning how to use true Japanese swords, and provides private, semi-private (for groups up to five students), and in-home private lessons.
One parent, Bob Baltera, states that his son started with Sensei Halperin at age 3 and at the time of the testimonial was 13, and describes that Sensei Halperin trains both the body and mind of students who range from young children to adults. Another parent, Hawa H., reports that her son has been attending the dojo for several years and describes him as becoming a more confident and stronger individual, and says she would highly recommend the dojo for anyone looking to learn authentic martial arts from a highly trained Sensei. A parent, Anna Ossowska-Borowik, describes starting karate at Traditional Martial Arts Center with her daughter when the child was three and a half years old, and reports that her daughter later competed at the Shuhari Cup in Saint Louis and won two gold medals, which she credits as recognition of Sensei’s work. Longtime student Sherry Kostecka, identified as 3rd dan karate and shodan Batto-do, states that she began Shotokan traditional karate in 1992, later joined Traditional Martial Arts Center after moving to San Diego, and says she also began learning Batto-do there and that she teaches in the junior class. Another student, Keyan Jaffari, reports having trained at Traditional Martial Arts Center for several years in both karate and batto-do after about eight years of previous taekwondo training, and states that the classes at this dojo are not simply about promoting students to the next belt.
