The YMCA of Greater San Francisco was established during the Gold Rush in 1853 and has more than 170 years of history. Its mission is to empower each person’s journey and strengthen the foundations of community. The organization is a 501(c)3 charitable community organization that serves more than 130,000 people through 15 neighborhood branches, more than 130 program sites, and one residential camp across Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. The YMCA of Greater San Francisco focuses on whole-person health and whole-community impact, addressing physical health, mental wellness, social connection, and economic opportunity, and is described as more than a gym or a place to go—a place to grow. One staff member describes the Y as a welcoming place for the community and reports enjoying working there and hearing how the Y has played a role in the lives of people they meet.
