About
Angels Gate Cultural Center Arts Education Programs include community classes that cover a range of art mediums and techniques, as well as hip hop classes. The program also offers an Artists-in-Classrooms (AIC) program that brings art instruction into schools and other community settings.
Angels Gate Cultural Center emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s, and in 1982 it was established as a nonprofit. Its mission is to provide space for artists to work and to engage community through arts education, exhibitions of contemporary art, and cultural events. Angels Gate Cultural Center serves the Los Angeles Harbor Region and surrounding communities with year-round contemporary art exhibitions, cultural events, community classes, and arts education, including arts education programming designed to foster creative expression and learning for student populations from underserved local communities, and stewarding the native Tongva land with annual events led by indigenous community members. The center hosts exhibitions of contemporary art throughout the year featuring the work of local, national, and international artists, and offers a range of programs and events that are suitable for families with children. Its flagship program provides affordable studio space to emerging and established artists in the Los Angeles area, and it provides programmatic access to exhibitions through audio-visual and virtual aids, including a tablet at the gallery entrance for virtual walk-throughs of second-floor spaces and virtual exhibitions and programming accessible through its website. One board member describes it as having “dedicated staff and artists” and “a hidden gem that everyone should be aware of.” A 3rd grade teacher from Webster Elementary reports that students enjoyed Monday morning art lessons and noted connections between art and other subjects. A Leland Elementary classroom teacher in Spring 2023 described an Artist-Teacher as maintaining structure while allowing students to be creative. A Normont Elementary classroom teacher in Spring 2023 shared that hip hop classes with Ms. Shantel supported students in working together, having fun, and creating something bigger than their individual work.
