Angels Gate Cultural Center emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s and was established as a nonprofit in 1982. Its mission is to provide space for artists to work and to engage community through arts education, exhibitions of contemporary art, and cultural events. It serves the Los Angeles Harbor Region and surrounding communities with contemporary art exhibitions, cultural events, community classes, and arts education, including programming designed to foster creative expression and learning for student populations from underserved local communities, and stewarding the native Tongva land with annual events led by indigenous community members. Angels Gate Cultural Center is described as a unique and vibrant contemporary arts center that serves as a cultural hub for the community of San Pedro and the greater Los Angeles area, with a flagship program that provides affordable studio space to emerging and established artists, exhibitions of contemporary art featuring local, national, and international artists in a variety of mediums such as painting, sculpture, and photography, and virtual exhibitions and programming accessible through its website, including a tablet at the gallery entrance for visitors to navigate a virtual walk-through of second-floor spaces.
One parent testimonial describes the staff and artists as dedicated and calls the center “a hidden gem that everyone should be aware of.” A 3rd grade teacher from Webster Elementary reports that students enjoyed Monday morning art lessons and used many different tools to create art, and that the lessons showed connections between art and other school subjects such as math and social studies. A classroom teacher from Leland Elementary in Spring 2023 notes that an Artist-Teacher named Anna maintained structure while allowing students enough freedom to be completely creative. A classroom teacher from Normont Elementary in Spring 2023 shares that the hip hop classes with Ms. Shantel helped students learn how to work together, have fun, and create something bigger than their individual work.
