School-Based Education and Scout Programs includes interactive school education programs, scout programs, nature walks, full moon hikes, monthly hikes, and nature activities for families. The program also offers guided Scout hikes, badge programs, Eagle, Gold or Silver Award Projects, self-guided group field trips, and native plant sales. Participants can use the Agents of Discovery augmented reality mobile game and can borrow nature backpacks loaded with information, field guides, fun activities and equipment.
• Schedule: Nature centers and trails have set open hours on specific days, and nature backpacks are available for loan during open hours on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10–3:30 pm.
• Price: Self-guided field trips are free but require pre-registration and adequate supervision.
The program is part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, which manages two nature centers and has preserved and protects 1,700 acres of natural land across the Peninsula, including 42 miles of public trails. The Conservancy offers school-based programs from elementary school science programs to student research projects, as well as volunteer internship opportunities in ecological restoration. The Conservancy’s Education Director is Holly Gray. The 3rd Grade Naturalist Program was launched in 1994, and in 1988 eleven Peninsula residents founded the volunteer organization that became the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.
The Conservancy’s stated goal at founding was “To preserve natural lands in perpetuity on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.” The Conservancy is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Peninsula’s natural lands, rare wildlife and coastal beauty for the benefit of its communities, and is committed to protecting and restoring the Peninsula’s unique local habitats that sustain rare and endangered species. The Conservancy’s goal is to educate and inspire the next generation of conservationists and Peninsula stewards.
