Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has offered marine education since 1935. Its mission is to be a leader in accessible, science-based marine education where every person is inspired to understand, respect, and protect the ocean and all life it sustains. The Aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and many staff serve on AZA committees and work groups focused on advancing conservation and animal wellbeing. The Aquarium is a gold-level partner of AZA’s Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) Sharks and Rays program and is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with support from Friends of CMA. The Aquarium places the highest priority on the care of animals with a robust enrichment program, regular wellness evaluations, continuous monitoring, and multi-point inspection of animal wellbeing through an Animal Welfare Committee.
