• Ages: 3–18 years old
San Pedro Ballet School is led by Cynthia Bradley and Patrick Bradley, also known as Miss Cindy and Mr. Patrick. The school opened in the fall of 1994, and in 1998 the Bradleys purchased the old Norwegian Bakery building and opened San Pedro Ballet School. In 2001, they started San Pedro City Ballet II as an apprentice-level company, and the school now enrolls approximately 250 students.
San Pedro Ballet School is the home of American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland, who was discovered by Cindy Bradley at age 13 through one of San Pedro City Ballet’s outreach programs. Misty Copeland made history in 2015 as the first African American female Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre. Many San Pedro Ballet School graduates have gone on to work in the dance world as performers, choreographers, and dance educators at high levels.
All students have the opportunity to perform in the school’s annual summer recital every June, and this recital is held at the historic Warner Grande Theater in San Pedro. Students age three and up are invited to participate in San Pedro City Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker, which features lavish costumes, set design, and guest appearances by professional dancers. The Nutcracker production has been a staple of the South Bay community for over 20 years.
San Pedro Ballet School provides a training ground for dancers of all ages and is the permanent home for San Pedro City Ballet, the school’s non-profit performance company. San Pedro City Ballet II serves as an apprentice-level company. The school offers featured summer camps and intensives for all ages and has an ongoing collaboration with The Dance Factory and Physical Therapy San Pedro.
San Pedro City Ballet’s outreach programs provide free access to dance education and performance opportunities to over 1,600 elementary school students in Southern California, supporting its mission of bringing ballet to the Los Angeles community. The organization has received a Dizzy Feet Foundation Grant and a California Arts Council Grant.
The school’s mission states that it trains students in the art of dance and in lessons of life, including how to be graceful, take care of their bodies, be responsible, work well with others, be good team members, work hard for what they want, deal with disappointment, make and accomplish goals, and understand that mastering a skill takes many hours and that success does not happen overnight. The mission also states that the school provides opportunities to build confidence on stage, make life-long friendships, and create something beautiful.
A parent testimonial from Allyssea Carver describes San Pedro Ballet School as feeling like a second family for her daughter and family, and mentions that each teacher, dancer, and parent come together to make ballet special for everyone, with specific appreciation for Miss Cindy, Mr. Patrick, and the San Pedro Ballet School family.
