About

San Pedro Ballet School offers classes in ballet, modern, contemporary, tap, jazz, hip hop, gymnastics, yoga, and Zumba. The program includes children’s programs, performance opportunities, an annual summer recital, and participation in San Pedro City Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker.

• Ages: 3–18 years old

San Pedro Ballet School opened in the fall of 1994, and in 1998 Cynthia Bradley and Patrick Bradley purchased the old Norwegian Bakery building and opened the school there. In 2001, they began San Pedro City Ballet II as an apprentice-level company, and the school’s enrollment is approximately 250 students. The school serves as a training ground for dancers of all ages and is the permanent home of San Pedro City Ballet, the school’s non-profit performance company, and students whose dancing reaches company level become members of San Pedro City Ballet. San Pedro City Ballet II functions as an apprentice-level company for developing dancers.

All students have the opportunity to perform in the school’s annual summer recital every June, which features costumes, music, and professional lighting. San Pedro City Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker has been a staple of the South Bay community for over 20 years and features lavish costumes, set design, and guest appearances by professional dancers. Students age three and up are invited to participate in this Nutcracker production.

San Pedro Ballet School is led by Cynthia Bradley (Miss Cindy) and Patrick Bradley (Mr. Patrick). The school is the home of American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland, who is a former student. Misty Copeland was discovered by Cindy Bradley as a 13-year-old through one of San Pedro City Ballet’s outreach programs, and in 2015 she became the first African American female Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre. Many San Pedro Ballet School graduates have gone on to work in the dance world as performers, choreographers, and dance educators at high levels.

The school’s mission states that it trains students in the art of dance and in lessons of life, including how to be graceful, how to take care of their bodies, responsibility, working well with others, being a good team member, working hard for what they want, dealing with disappointment, making and accomplishing goals, and understanding that mastering a skill takes many hours and that success does not happen overnight. The mission also states that the school provides opportunities to build confidence on stage, make life-long friendships, and create something beautiful.

San Pedro Ballet School and San Pedro City Ballet provide free access to dance education and performance opportunities to over 1,600 elementary school students in Southern California. San Pedro City Ballet’s mission is bringing ballet to the Los Angeles community. The organization has received a Dizzy Feet Foundation Grant and a California Arts Council Grant, and it offers featured summer camps and intensives for all ages, as well as an ongoing collaboration with The Dance Factory and Physical Therapy San Pedro.

A parent testimonial from Allyssea Carver describes the school as feeling like a second family for her daughter and family, and mentions appreciation for each teacher, dancer, and parent, as well as for Miss Cindy, Mr. Patrick, and the San Pedro Ballet School family.
