Brentwood Art Center was established in 1971 by founders Ed and Linda Buttwinick and became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 2012. BAC instructors are award-winning teaching artists. The organization’s mission is to provide visual arts education for students of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences through in-person and online learning led by its faculty, and to provide equitable community access to arts programming throughout the greater Los Angeles region. Brentwood Art Center has received the Guidestar Seal of Transparency in 2020.

The leadership team includes founders Ed and Linda Buttwinick; a Board of Directors consisting of Lloyd Bookman, Lisa Feintech, Deborah Gero, Noreen Herzog, Karen Hirshan, Gary Paller, Bev Lowe, and Gary Glick; Director Emeritus Donald Burris; and administration members Amy Gantman, Kathleen Masselink Salinas, Lisa Thomas, Jason Czerwnski, Jordan Angulo, Sasha Huff, and Rocio Garica.

Brentwood Art Center states a non-discrimination policy admitting students of any race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sex, age, and sexual orientation. Most children’s courses include supplies while on campus, and if a course requires additional materials there is a supply list under the course description on the website; these materials can be purchased from Blick, Amazon, Michael’s, or any art supply store, and students may also use materials they already own. The online registration system automatically prorates tuition fees if a student joins after the start date. The campus is open Tuesday through Saturday starting at 9am and closed on Sunday and Monday.

Brentwood Art Center provides equitable community access to arts programming throughout the greater Los Angeles region and is committed to expanding arts access throughout Southern California, with increased participation from students in economically challenged and diverse areas of Los Angeles County. Recent community partners include UCLA’s Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Oncology, ArtworxLA, and the Al Wooten Jr Youth Center in South Los Angeles. Since 2014, Brentwood Art Center has worked with the Veterans Administrations in Westwood and Long Beach, providing visual literacy skills for veterans.
