Crow Comedy Inc. is a nonprofit 501c3 organization serving artists and cultural communities by providing education, mentorship, career development, and workshops. Its mission states that it is a platform for expression, healing, and social progress through the art of comedy and storytelling, with a focus on empowering people with joy and laughter and ensuring access for those whose stories might otherwise go untold. The Crow states that it provides a stage and safe space for all ages, genders, sexual orientations, races, religions, backgrounds, abilities, and socio-economic classes, and focuses on empowering individuals to find their voice and express their point of view through writing and performing. The organization’s vision is to build bridges and connections in society through storytelling and comedy, to drive social change through understanding each others’ stories, and to create a more accepting, understanding society by sharing different perspectives and world views through laughter.
Crow Comedy Inc. describes its community involvement through the Bergamot Comedy Festival, which is described as a community-focused performance and networking opportunity that aims to bridge the gap between industry and rising talent and to assist underrepresented voices, while giving Santa Monica locals access to live shows and free educational seminars about the comedy industry. The organization also notes that it offers comedy and storytelling classes for ages seven to one hundred and seven.
Parents describe their children playing with complex aspects of language, such as structuring a narrative to make people laugh, and note that this is difficult to learn and teach in regular school settings. One parent and teacher reports being “blown away” by how a range of ages were taught in one group and observed growth and learning in one week of camp, with kids voluntarily writing, rewriting, polishing, and practicing their pieces at home. Parents also report changes in self-esteem, communication skills, vocabulary, and critical thinking through writing and performing their own material, as well as observations of resilience and learning from trying, failing, and adjusting material. Several parents describe experiences of children with stage fright, speech and language therapy needs, introversion, and autism participating in performances and receiving specific recognition for their style. One parent notes that the social and emotional impact of the camp has been “incredible” and mentions receiving a scholarship that allowed extended time at camp. A performer, Nina Nguyen, describes The Crow as a welcoming space to watch and perform comedy and shares an experience of positive trans representation for a young audience member.
